Dental Onlays & Inlays in Thailand
Dental Onlays & Inlays in Thailand

As time goes by, our teeth’s biting surfaces become damaged due to all the friction when grinding food and the formation of cavities from various bacteria brought about by sugary foods. The traditional method of repairing these damages used to be the installation of a filling or crown, which have the disadvantage of coming off after a period of time. But you needn’t worry.

Our dentists use inlays and onlays as a more effective and permanent method of repairing these damages. These can be fabricated from porcelain, gold and the most commonly used ceramic resin.

An inlay is more or less like a filling and is placed in the cusp tips of the damaged tooth. They are all customized to fit the individual’s cavity that has already been prepared for the procedure. It is then cemented to stay fixed on the cusps. An onlay on the other hand is normally used when the damage is extensive as it can cover more than one cusp in the dental formula. Unlike the placement of a crown which requires a lot of the tooth structure to be done away with, the onlay will conserve most of the tooth structure.

Procedure

The application of inlays and onlays has to be done in two sessions. In the first session, our dentist at MedAsia Healthcare Complex has to remove any tooth decay or old filling that may be in place. He then prepares the tooth for the procedure. He will take an impression of the damaged tooth, which will then be used to customize a ceramic onlay or inlay in a dental laboratory. While you wait for the second session, you will have a temporary sealant on the tooth that will keep it from gathering bacteria and being exposed to air.

The first thing done during the second session is the removal of the sealant. The dentist will then make sure that the customized inlay or onlay fits properly and that you are able to chew food with it. If all is well, it is then bonded with the tooth using a strong dental bonding resin. Once this procedure is finished the dentist will then polish the inlay/onlay to make it smooth.

Advantages of Dental Inlays & Onlays
  • They restore the beauty of your teeth
  • Looks exactly like your teeth unlike metals like amalgam or gold
  • Are very strong once they have been bonded and cemented
  • They do not stain like our teeth do
  • Can cover up huge cavities
  • They last longer than other solutions
  • Conserve most of your tooth structure unlike putting fillings or crowns
Disadvantages of Inlays & Onlays
  • Are not as cheap as amalgam or manufactured composite
  • Can fracture if mistreated
  • Cannot be done in one dental session
Maintenance
  • The patient has to avoid biting hard objects as inlays or overlays can fracture if mistreated.
  • The patient has to brush and floss the overlay/inlay like his teeth regularly
  • The patient has to maintain oral hygiene by using mouth rinse and toothpaste that contains fluoride
